Pittsburgh Roofing Frequently Asked Questions

Roof problems cannot go ignored. The roof is arguably the most important investment in your home or place of business. When it comes to roof installations, it’s imperative that it be done correctly, since the roof has to stand strong for years.

When should I replace my roof?

When you start to notice these issues with your asphalt shingles it may be time to take action:

Missing granules on shingles
Exposed asphalt on shingles
Curling shingles
Finding loose shingle pieces
Discolored shingles
Algae and moss

How much does a new roof cost?

Several factors go into determining the cost of your new roof. Roofing prices include the quality and professionalism of your roofing contractor; the brand, type and grade of roofing shingle you select; the size of your roof and the shape and slope of your roofline. Do not choose a roofing contractor on cost alone.

Contact AAA Roofing for a free no obligation estimate:

How long does a roofing project take?

The average sized home takes about 2-4 days to replace the roof. Larger homes and commercial projects can take anywhere from a week or more. Remember, weather is always a factor.

What brand shingles do you use?

AAA Roofing uses GAF and ATLAS roof shingles. These are the top rated shingles in the roofing industry.

Can my roof be replaced in the winter?

Yes! We work year-round.

What potential issues may come up during a roof replacement project?

Water damage and rot are probably the biggest concerns with re-roofing especially if the roof has been leaking for a long period of time. Woodwork may need to occur if any plywood, trusses, rafters or any other wood is damaged.

Should I replace the shingles or the entire roofing system?

A roof consists of much more than a layer of shingles. Replacing the entire system, which includes Leak Barrier Protection, and Ridge Ventilation is the best route for enhancing the roof’s performance.

Will a new roof lower my energy bills?

If your roof is old, roof replacement can help lower energy bills. It’s ideal that the attic remains close to the outside temperature, but overheating during the summer is a sign of inadequate ventilation. This can directly cause the HVAC to work in overdrive. A new roof lowers energy bills with ventilation and sound materials that prevent excess drafts and water leaks.

Is a new roof a good investment?

You will increase your resale value on your home if you add a new roof. Remodeling Magazine says that from its survey regarding cost vs. value, a new roof can increase your home’s value by around $12,000. The roof takes up roughly 40% of a home’s curb appeal, so consider roof replacement for an instant wow-factor.

Can I repair my roof myself?

While some small jobs can be tackled by DIY homeowners, major work or a roof replacement is a pretty complex process that requires training and thus should be left to the professionals. Professional roofing contractors goes to through training and certification by the manufacturer of the materials in order to obtain extended manufacturer warranty.

What causes a roof to wear out?

Severe weather, direct sun, algae and mildew growth can all be factors in what causes a roof to wear out. Hail stones striking the roof and removing some of the granules are also a problem.

My roof is leaking but I just had new shingles replaced last year?

The shingles may not have been properly installed, they could have been placed over an existing layer of shingles that is not giving adequate coverage, or there could be new damage due to a recent storm. The best way to find out is to have an inspection and estimate done.

What is Leak Barrier Protection or underlayment?

A roofing underlayment is also known as felt paper, and is installed beneath your shingles, over the wood of your roof. It helps protect your roof from wind driven rain that can get beneath your shingles and potentially damage your home.

Are metal roofs loud when it rains?

While it’s true that metal can resonate sound more, today’s metal roofs are installed over solid wood decking to dull noise. Embossed textures of new metal roofs also help to disperse rain, reducing noise even further.

In recent studies, the decibel level for rainfall on an asphalt roof is 46, while the decibel level for metal roofs with underlying decking is 52.

How does metal roofing stand up to strong winds?

Better than traditional asphalt shingles. Asphalt shingles can blow off in winds of 70mph while some metal roofing systems can withstand winds up to 200mph.

Are metal roofs safe in a lightning storm?

A metal roof isn’t any more likely to attract lighting than any other roofing material.
